Recap of Presentation “Backing up and Protecting Your Genealogical Data”

Like always I had fun presenting for Las Villas del Norte. This time around it was on the importance of backing up and protecting your genealogical data.

I covered many topics and I just wish I would have had more time to present but I had to make it a brief presentation due to it being the 2nd annual Meet and Greet. Here is a short recap of what I talked about.

The two main topics were:

  • Digital Records and Documents
  • Printed Records and Documents

Before backing anything up I stressed the importance of "What to Back up?" and provided several ideas. I then went on to explain the various tools and or methods that can be used to backup and preserve your data such as CD/DVD-Roms, Flash Drives, and External Hard drives.

I also talked about the various Online Backup Services that are out there and the benefits of using them.

I then provided the audience with ideas on how to protect their own Printed Records and Documents and the various tools that can be used to preserve their records.

I also had with me the scanning stand that I use at archives to copy records fast and easy. I provided attendees with the list off the shelf components so that they can buy them and create their own scanning stands.

Finally, I closed my presentation with best practices when it comes to backing up their genealogical data.
