Overcoming Language Barriers in Genealogical Research - Esther Camacho

Here is a short recap of the presentation "Overcoming Language Barriers in Genealogical Research" and what you can expect from it. In this presentation, Esther Camacho helps those of us struggling with Hispanic genealogical research, to learn the keys to naming structure, record patterns, reading dates and basic vocabulary without having to be proficient in the Spanish language.

The reason we invited Esther to do her presentation was because many of our members are no proficient in reading Spanish documents. With this presentation we learn basic knowledge to help us get started reading these records and making out the genealogical information in them.

Intro Dialogue (0:10) - Esther talks a bit about her self and talks about her own struggles in reading Spanish documents.

Naming Structure (2:55) - In this section Esther explain the naming structure of Hispanic names.

Reading Dates and Years (9:07) - In this section you will learn the method that Esther use her self to quickly read and make out dates in documents.

Basic Vocabulary (15:34) - Here you will learn about the basic vocabulary that you need to learn to be abll to extract the genealogical information in records.

Reading Records Part 1 (19:19) - In this section we are provided with the different record types and examples of how to read them.

Reading Records Part 2 (28:08) - This section is a continuation of the record types and how to read them.

Things to Remember (36:06) - In this final section we are provided with tips and encouragement to keep learning on how to read Spanish records. 

This presentation is over 40 minutes and highly recommend it for anyone with roots in New Mexico.
