Presentation Information

Title: Jewish Roots in Nuevo Leon - What Documents Actually Say

Summary: After the initial founding of Monterrey, the arrest and trial of the Carvajal family resulted on the scattering of the kingdom's initial settlers. Most people with ancestry in Nuevo Leon descend from the subsequent migration waves. This session analyzes the question of Jewish origins of these later settlers.

  1. How can I get more information on the Charles family and the “witchcraft” allegations? My maternal grandmother’s maiden name is Charles and I have only been able to trace them back to Tranquilino Sanchez Charles (born 1775) in Nuevo Leon which would be my 4th great grandfather (is my research is correct). Tranquilino’s son is Yldefonso Charles (1811). Yldefonso’s son is Dario Salaiz Charles (1874). Dario is the father of Sara Alviar Gonzalez Charles (1903 married to Refugio Cardona Gonzalez 1902). Sara is the mother to Emilia Trevino Gonzales (1921) who is my paternal grandmother.

      1. Is there a way to contact the presenter to obtain information on his source or suggestions on where to go to get more information on this? I searched around the site but could not find any source links or contact information for the presenter & presentation material. I have been attempting to expand my sources on the paternal Charles branch for awhile. I have had quite some success with other paternal & maternal land grant based branches like the Trevinos, Bustamantes, Longorias, Gonzalez as records have been more readily available and the families were well established in the area for a significant amount of time. But the Charles branch tended to be quite elusive and not as well documented. What I have found shows usage of multiple last names, different spelling variants of Charles, or name changes in general increasing the challenges in obtaining data. I have these beautiful long, expanding branches on my tree that I have taken all this time and effort to build and then the Charles stump right in the middle. Any assistance or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!!
