Brick Wall – Mauricio Villanueva, Spaniard Killed In Hidalgo County 1870s

I’ve got two Brick-Walls that this group might be able to help with. I’ll start with the harder one.
Timotea Villanueva (1872 – 1966) was born in El Sauz, TX to Mauricio Villanueva and Marta Ruiz. This is from her death certificate, primarily.
She shows up on the 1880 Census as a boarder on a different ranch. Her father’s country of origin is Spain, and mother’s is Mexico. At least, the name and age match. I’ve not found any other Timotea Villanueva’s birth records from the same time period, and she doesn’t appear elsewhere in that census.
So where did her parents go between her birth and 1880? Turns out there are numerous sources describing how “Mauricio Villanueva, a young Spaniard” was killed in a bandit raid at the Fulton General Store. At least one source places this store at El Sauz, continuing to tie things together.
So I’d like help tracking down this Mauricio, where he came from, a death record, etc.
I’ve found:
* Voter Registration card from 1869, stating he had been in Texas for 7 years and was from Spain. Coming to Texas in 1862, could Confederate records or lack thereof he a factor?
* Tax Records indicating he owned property in the area
Not much else. I’ve found a Mauricio Villanueva born in Spain around the right time, but without anything else I can’t link them.
